Movie Reviews

RAMBO IV *** - A pretyty decent flick for what it was - and finally the movies get the effect of a M2HB sorta right.

THE KINGDOM ***** - A MUST SEE - again the movie industry gets it right. You want to see how evil the enemy is - watch this

OUTLAWS - FIGHTING BACK *** - Pretty decent flick - a sort of British Boondock Saints...but the ending sucks.

So here is a bitch about the Army...

They have this new thing called "Eagle Cash" - this is, in my humble opinion, a racket - looting @ it's finest - brilliant use of the art of flim flam in order to make money, cheaply -

Here is how it works -

The Army issues you an "Eagle Cash" smart card.

You transfer funds from your bank account or directly from your check

You use the card @ select locations (almost everywhere in CENTCOM AOR)

There is no fee for you to pay

SOUNDS like a good deal - no?

HERE is the REST of the story -

The Army is working its way to requiring an Eagle Cash card for *any* transaction in CENTCOM. You already MUST have one to draw casual pay or write a check in Q8.

Further - there is NO interest paid on your money stored in your EC account -

I am thinking that *someone* sold the Army a bill of goods - and are pushing for it to be the *only* way for a Soldier to buy anything in the CENTCOM AOR. Meanwhile, they make millions on the $ that is "stored" on those cards.

Hmmmm......

So today was fun...

Had a bit of a trip out in the red - that was supposed to be a pretty fluff mission - that turned into a dismounted patrol out in the streets of Baghdad - I really can't go into any detail -  but suffice it to say that there were some pretty high speed Iraqi Airborne MPs out there that backed us up - it was good to be back in the red - it felt REALLY good - that may sound nutz to some of you - but there is, ironically, just a bit of peace that comes with being totally in the zone - - hot as hell - - scaning rooftops - - watching hundreds of people - - feeling the reassuring familiarity of the grips of my M4 - - checking on the principal - - the weight of your vest, plates and combat load -- not thinking about the mechanics of your movements - - they just happen - - you find yourself moving in autopilot as your sensors are tuned in like the bionic man - - ready for everything - - placid like the surface of a lake - - staying frosty as hell - - mmmm....good stuff....

Wow - This is gonna be a crazy year -

Well, our first week or so has been madness on so many levels - I still have a LOT of notes to convert to stories - But I will hit the highlights quickly -

We spent some time south of Baghdad training on the ranges (yes MORE ranges!) OK - I can't resist - 1 QUICK story - heh - I can't even write this without laughing - So no shit - there we were, on the machine gun range and we were almost done when the CO decided that he wanted to get down with our Para-Minimi (Shorty M249 - very Gucci kit) - So while he went to get is battle rattle on, the outgoing 1SG and I decided to play a little joke on him....So we popped the top on the drum of 5.56 and placed the belt in backwards, then replaced the top and placed it back in the carry bag- giggling like schoolboys the whole time - When the boss came back over he dutifully took the ammo and strolled out to the firing line. Now you have to picture this - this guy is hard core - a Ranger, combat vet and is generally switched on. To top that off his safety is our most squared away SNCO- also a combat vet and knows what the hell is going on. So there they are about to load the SAW and spend at least 3 minutes trying to figure out why the drum is fitting but the bullets are going the wrong way. Turning the drum one way and the gun another...all the while the other 1SG and I are about to die - laughing ourselves into a headache. They finally figured it out, when they noticed that I had a Joe filming the whole thing. (Video will be up on YouTube soon!)

The trip down and up were uneventful - But just before we left a patrol got hit pretty hard by an IED -

We were in the CSH while the wounded were being worked on - there was 1 KIA - They were all MP types - the guys hurt were Air Force Security Forces- I will post more about that later...suffice it to say that it sucked - DEFENSOR FORTIS MY AF BROTHERS!

Then the day before we got back IDF took the lives of two guys in our AO - one from our command...that sucked pretty bad as well...

BUT - it is still *relatively* safe in our area, so no worries...

On the upside of things we have completed close to 20 missions already without a peep outside the wire - ironic, no?

At any rate - if any fans of Mookie or AQIZ are out there - PHUC EWE! If *we* see ya - we WILL get ya...heh.

Another up note is that the outgoing unit has adopted a family that lives in our AOR. They are the REAL poor - they are fans of GWB and America, and they are targets of the baddies. In fact they took a round of IDF on one of their dwellings in the last week...one 3 year old boy slightly wounded (in fact the one on the right in the pic)...grrr...In the near future I will be trying to organize some relief for these folk...I will post what they need here. Those of you who would like to help out can reach me in the usual ways.

Here is a pic of one of my troops with some of the kids -

A quick story before I go wash my nasty arse

SO you know - It is HOT in the desert - running 2 miles gets you sweaty..anyway -

So there we were at the crew served weapons range - yes again...and we were getting a period of instruction on these new nifty "Escalation of Force" items called a "pen flare" - actually these things aren't really new at all - they have been an NSN item for years and used by AF and Navy aviators in allied forces for years - they are basically a 9mm zip gun that fires a phosphorous flare about 2-300 meters - we use them to warn off the LNs from approaching our element so as to reduce the need to fire actual warning shots form one of our more lethal systems-

So, no shit - there we were...

Everyone was practising with our pen flares - launching them with great vigor at the targets out on the range - having a grand time...wait - let us return to the morning...fade to squiggly screen flashback effect -

So here I am - the 1SG of a combat unit - berating the Platoon Sergeants for allowing certain mutant Soldiers to wear proper winter gear, to include long sleeve silk weight thermal shirts, winter gloves and fleece caps under their combat gear when it is 100+ degrees outside - I let them know that the commander would pursue NJP against anyone who sustained a heat injury while wearing that nonsense - Winter gear under body armor and helmets?!?! Are you serious?

Back to the future -

There we are popping off flares and giggling like school girls when a soldier wearing a fleece cap under his ACH, a thermal shirt under his uniform and WINTER WIEGHT GLOVES (which he later claimed to the the primary culprit for his clumsy handling of the flare) fiddle phucs a pen flare, flagging the whole unit and launching it straight into the crowd...fortunately no one was injured as the flare embedded itself harmlessly into the desert floor, but damn! Of course prior to this incident I was quite sure that this particular soldier is yet another idiot savant - certifiably so...window licking bastard.

Delayed again -

Stuck waiting for the Air Farce to un-phuc itself - again -So maybe I shall spin a yarn about our intrepid heroes - and their adventures in the desert- maybe a few- it will be a long day and I have catching up on here I must do!

As a side note - recent events in my life had made me appreciate you, my friends and family, so much more - @ risk of sounding like a certain patchouli smelling hippy that I love - I really love you all, and miss you all very much. I can't wait to get home again and spend some quality time with all of you.

Crystal blue skies over the roar of the Atlantic - white sand squeaking in protest underfoot as steel-drums woo us, sweet tones wafting past the cries of gulls...mojitos by day and Jameson's by night...the kids oblivious to our oblivion....damn i miss it....

Arrived in Q8

And it is GLORIOUS compared to Ft. Riley - god I hated that place and all the ancillary nonsense that went with it... But now we are in  Camp XXX and it looks much the same as it did last time. We were greeted by our LNOs from the unit that we are replacing and they are taking good care of us. The food sux worse than @ Riley - which I thought was an impossibility - if the Food up north is as bad - I will drop lbs with a quickness - yuk. Went for a run this AM - yay! 60 degrees and dry...perfect...Oh - the boss pinned my Diamond on me on the bird - that was nice - except that now I have to go get everything re-sewn...and I hope the pay catches up to me

Well gotta jam - will post again ASAP!

Here we go Loopty-Loo!

In typical fashion we were shorted over a week of block leave before deployment due to the machinations of the Air Farce - although I have serious questions about the training unit's attempt to "keep it from happening".

This was further compounded by the training unit calling me and the CO after everyone was home and attempting to change the load out schedule to a time *before* our published Cinderella time to be back in the barracks...what rubbish - fortunately the CO told them to pound sand and we pushed it back until after everyone was back.

We were issued 4 gear boxes (instead of 1) to put additional supplies, such as manuals, medical, weapons maintenence and training aids...this was because here at "Combat Advisor" school the average team is 12-15 pax - Our company is *considerably* more than that - so we were authorized addtional space for team kit - of course when the load out Nazi came to inspect our boxes - he hardlined us and held us to 1 box - "one box per team - period"  - so we spent half the night finding space in individual duffles for the team kit - grrrr....of couse all of our assault packs have to fit in a airline style box before we are allowed to get on the aircraft - so we had to pack those VERY light...can't wait for the cluster phuc in the morrow....

On a happy note - we are all now proud graduates of the Army's Elite "Combat Advisor" course...we just want to know when we are getting our tab...and does it take precidence over SF, Sapper or Ranger tabs?!?! (BTW - that was sarcasm)

On an even happier note - I got to drive my car this w/e - zoom - zoom - zoom I love that car -

On an even more happy note I got to spend time with the kiddos this w/e - played some baseball - stole some deedle-dee and chilled -

On a more different happy note - I recovered my Ti and promised to come back with my shield...or on it.

So - the surge is winding down...looks like my job might get interesting...doens't that just figure - oh wicked hand of fate  -

Mars - we ask for the steel and the fire to vanquish our enemies...

Themis - we ask that you smile blindlyupon us, as we do your work against the enemies of freedom...

Nike - we ask that you grant us vicotry - it is your realm..

So, in the immortal words of Conan - the good things are:

"To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women".

Snootch to the Mutha Phucin Bootch.

Almost time...

A couple of days to go until we head out for IZ - I cannot wait - Ft. Riley is by far the worst stateside Army facility that I have ever encountered. not that the facilities themselves are sub-par - it is just that the weather and environment is horrific.

I am really looking forward to being operational again...getting sand back on my boots - getting away from here...I miss the feeling - the smells - the sounds - the taste - the time to think - to be thoughtless - to be everything and nothing....I need this year...it needs me...I have a lot to work out - a lot to consider - a lot to wiegh.

I will miss you all - and hope to see you again on the flipside - Some of you I will see this w/e - some on mid tour - all in time. You all take care - remember what is important - don't let what is not slow you down...

So back to my war - I miss it so.

OMG - last night was the M2 range - bloody well COLD - like for real COLD...ok think cold - and then put cold in a freezer...with a box fan blowing cold air on the cold. Then make it snow. Oh - then wear body armor for 22 hours st8. bleh.

On a fun note - hey Vladmir - you think our ABM program was scary in concept? Check out what we can do to stuff way out in space - on a balistic trajectory - at 14K miles per hour...heh

Ack - the cold sux and other stuff

So another week down of the Combat Advisor course – All is moving along quite well – the troops are starting to gel and become a real team – the TTPs are starting to stick and in a month or so they should be something close to combat perfection. Our mission is really one that has to be executed perfectly every time…it weighs heavy in my mind – the responsibility of being the senior NCO for a combat maneuver element is staggering. I see my number one mission as getting everyone home with all of the parts that they come with. All else that happens on the plus side is pure gravy. As far as the rest of the world – it seems that we will have a liberal in the Whitehouse regardless if you are voting for the Elephants or Donkeys - *bleh* And of course – that coupled with the recent spate of shootings the left will be calling for the resumption of the scary looking gun ban or worse – I tell you – go buy an AR15 lower NOW – they will be banned soon…grrr….anyway – gotta jam –

Great Class the other day on COIN - that is - Counter Insurgency - By LTC Nagl

A really great class in the series...here at the Combat Advisor course that we are going thru...

LTC Nagl is the SME for the Army when it comes to COIN - his media appearances are too numerous to mention - so google him...I have included an article that he authored.

At any rate - I think he is right on MANY points...and he "gets it" concerning the enemy and the need to win this war...

The first week of "Combat Advisor" course

Hmmmmmm....in the spirit of the training that the first Green Berets had early in Vietnam - the Army is training non-SF types to fill this role in IZ...Can't say much about the training or our mission - but suffice it to say...there is a LOT of cultural awaremness required. - Anyway - more to follow...the days have been VERY long and VERY cold - 10 degrees with a wind chill down to -2 sux!

Whew - Long (but VERY good) w/e - long first day of training -

I am so tired that I will not belabor the points above – As far as the first real day of training – the classroom piece was poor at best and the practical was a cordon and search in a simulated Iraqi village. I am not impressed. My boys need a LOT of work…I hope they improve exponentially…grrr….well…got to get to sleep as tomorrow starts out with two hours of Arabic language class. Yay. I simply love the “Combat Advisor” course. Oh yeah - my boy lost his first tooth – damn at the things I miss….and I miss those kiddos…anyway – more soon…TTFN

Here in ATL

One final time before we move to the next stop before the last stop I got here a day early as the BDE CO wanted all the 1SGs to be present the day before the troops - makes complete sense...but would have been nice to know when we went home instead of 5 days before our return....grrrr.....oh well..."three bags full"

I got to see the kids before I left for the airport - Trey and I played catch for a few minutes in the front yard - Trin was sleepy and a bit sick...poor girl...I will miss them emmensly...

The flight was nice  - The Airline hooked me up with a 1st class seat - nicely done (yay!) and I had a cold Heineken in my hand within seconds! My noise canceling headphones were AWESOME - no jet noise - good jams - and it even blocked out the screaming baby back in coach! Everyone is SO nice when you travel in uniform....but some give you a really sad look like they just found out that you have terminal cancer...JFC people - just because we are Soldiers and going off to war doesn't gurantee out untimely demise or life shattering wounds - heh. But the majority were really nice to the point of insisting on buying you a soft drink or a snack...heh...I declined all....but it was SO nice to have that sort kindness bestowed on you. Even people just passing would make a point of saying "thank you"...

However - I do have a bit of a gripe - I arrived at the airport and no driver - went to the USO - no driver...the lady behind the desk at the USO acted like I was crazy...anyway - I call the S4 NCOIC about the driver - no answer....grrrrrr.....I am rapidly losing my frostiness....I trudge down to the taxi stand and load my stuff in a mini-van driven by - you guessed it - "Mohammad Abdullah" - here is me in ACUs with 3 LARGE bags full of US Army kit...and paranoid...worried about old boy shouting Allah-hu -Akbar and pulling into some AQ safehouse...but $65 of your tax dollars later I arrive safely at the hotel...thank Mr. Abdullah in Arabic and check in - *whew*

Well - more later - and no time for a spell check - so over it

The music industry has shown some backbone in a non-partisan swell of support for our armed forces.

Billy Joel's new song (sung by Cass Dillon) "Christmas in Fallujah" will be on iTunes on the 4th.

Another group with many headliners including Mr. Joel - have donated some of their biggest hits to a cd that is being distributed free to any US Servicemember - "For The Troops"

Thanks for restoring *some* faith in the American entertainment industry!

We should ban tigers...or zoos...or zoo keepers...or guns...

Because surely the world is too complicated a place to understand that a frackin' TIGER is a frackin' WILD ANIMAL and should be treated as though it may EAT YOU at any second. So where are all of the left-nuts decrying zoos and tigers and guns ?? (a cop shot the tiger with a gun!) - TRUST me - someone will call foul on SOMETHING here...and not just accept the fact that a wild animal ate people who were too slow to get out of the way...natural selection at work. Ask Siegfried where Roy is Of course those two nancy bois are in a river in Egypt about the whole thing - saying that actually the tiger was HELPING Roy as he had a stoke...so when I go to have a stroke, could someone just hit me with a car and drag me, trapped between the bumper and the road, to the hospital?

I am torn over this….I need to research it more….as I have a strange and creeping feeling that this cat may not represent ALL of the Lakota Nation…Russell Means may not be an “official” representative of the Lakota Nation, and I cannot find proof that he is…although he did run with his running mate Larry Flynt (of “Hustler” porn magazine fame) against Reagan and Bush for the Republican nomination back in the 80s…Now here are the points of why I am torn…

>>

>

1)      TheUnited States has been guilty of abusing the various Native nations – before and after treaties were signed.

>>

2)      The Lakota nation (like many other Native nations) should enjoy some autonomy and self determination (as they do)

3)      Allowing the Lakota nation to secede from the union would set a VERY dangerous precedence.

4)      On the other hand – would we not, as a benevolent republic be honor bound to let the Lakota (and any others) secede if we could not resolve their treaty bound grievances?

5)      Are we not honor bound to address those grievances regardless of the desire to secede?

6)      The real issue, I think – lies in the exact status (legally) of the various nations as SOVEREIGN nations.

Many questions…the answers will bring on many more…
